Oil Drilling in Alaska Reserve

This week both CNN and Fox News ran AP stories about an upcoming Senate showdown on oil drilling in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). The AP articles are similar with some exact wording the same but there are some differences as well. Fox is more pro-Republican and pro-drilling; CNN the opposite as shown by the choices of words they used. Examples are shown in the table below. For an interesting look at the pictures each chose, see this related post:

CNN notes Republican push in headline

Republicans ready to push again for ANWR drilling

Arctic Oil Battle Looms

CNN uses “Republican” plans and just the word “opposition.” Fox says “Senate plans” and notes “Democratic opposition”

Republicans plan to use a budget measure to overcome strong opposition

as the Senate plans to use a budget measure … hoping to sidestep strong Democratic opposition

CNN notes that “environmentalists concede they face the most difficult challenge …”. Fox notes that should they lose “their most important challenge” it would be a “stinging defeat.”

Environmentalists have been lobbying hard to keep oil rigs out of the refuge's coastal plain, a breeding ground for caribou, …

They concede that this year they face the most difficult challenge in their efforts to protect the refuge.

That would be a stinging defeat for environmentalists who consider protecting the refuge as their most important challenge in Congress. Environmentalists have stepped up their lobbying, hoping to convince lawmakers that drilling in the refuge would harm the area's breeding grounds for caribou, …

Both use the same sentence about a group visiting Alaska. Fox adds emphasis by adding a quote from Senator Domenici (R-NM) OR perhaps CNN left out the quote.

A small group of senators and key administration officials are flying to Alaska's North Slope this weekend to try to dramatize their argument that the refuge can be developed in an environmentally sound way, using modern drilling technology.

"We will see for ourselves how American ingenuity and innovation protects our environment and our wildlife while allowing us to develop our own energy," Domenici said

The second entry is the best in illustrating FOX's bias. It is plainly incorrect to divide the two groups into "the senate" and "democrat opposition". Obviously, the opposition is a part of the senate. On the other hand, it is the republicans who are leading the charge on this issue and the opposition comes from the democrats, independents -- well, at least one, Jim Jeffords -- and, possibly, a few republican senators as well. So, CNN is accurate, FOX is not.
